Yesterday we celebrated my cousin John and his bride-to-be Mikaela with an engagement party in Newport Beach at Pelican Hill. It was a Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed affair so guests were asked to wear little black dresses and Mikaela showed up looking gorgeous in a black floor length gown with a Tiffany blue ribbon belt.
I always think to only wear black in the winter and come spring am much more excited for florals and colorful dresses, but was surprised by how many cute springtime LBDs I saw at the party.
The great thing about an LBD is that you can wear it over and over again, and this sweetheart side drape dress by Norma Kamali that I got for the occasion is one I know I’ll put on for more cocktail parties this year. I’m also always loaning clothes out to friends and know it’s one that will look good on everybody!
It’s a great closet staple and comfy, which is extra important to me for family affairs. If you know my family you know that an event with them will go all evening and I’m not just talking about parties. I’m talking about your average Tuesday night dinner or a binge-watching session of Game of Thrones or The OC.
Growing up I used to joke that I wished a family who ate at six o’clock at night would adopt me, because my family rarely sat down before eight-thirty. Often it wasn’t until nine and when my cousin John and his family were visiting we would rarely eat before ten or eleven.
Just the other week I called my aunt, John’s mom, at eleven-thirty she told me to, “Come on by! We’re just sitting down for fondu!” As crazy as that seems, I do love knowing that no matter the time of day someone in my family will be up and probably more than willing to invite me over for dinner or a negroni. And there is something so nice about being around people that never make you feel like you need to get going because you know they’re not in a rush to get to bed. They’ve very in the moment people, which when you think about is really quite lovely.
Saturday I was in this dress until well into early Sunday morning. Here are some of my other favorite LBD’s I recommend wearing all night long this spring!
