Next weekend I’m heading to Italy to celebrate one of my best friend’s weddings! I haven’t been back since the trip that loosely inspired my next novel, Map of Us, and can’t wait to spend five days in Tuscany with the bride-to-be, Kelsey, and the rest of the wedding party.
Last time I was in Europe, I traveled for four months with just a backpack. I spent days searching for the right pieces that wouldn’t wrinkle, could be dressed up or down, AND were cute. Many of the travel blogs I read ahead of that trip mentioned forgoing cute for comfortable. And AAA was trying to sell me outfits that looked like what I’d imagine the company that manufactures brown paper bags would sell if they started making clothing. Personally, I feel there’s always a way to bridge the gap if you search hard enough!
For instance, these Castaner Espadrillas are strappy with a wedge and come in all sorts of colors to compliment any outfit; they are the most comfortable shoe I own. And maxi dresses like this one from Joie are flattering and so comfy you can wear them to sleep. James Perse and Bobi (cheaper) were where I got my basics for that trip. You can find two of my travel go-tos from those stores here and here.
This time, I’m gone for only five days, but I’ve put just as much thought into what I’m bringing. I find it’s easiest to travel if you know exactly what the weather will be and what you’re going to wear each day. Not only does this cut down on baggage fees (I never travel with more than a carry-on!) but planning your outfits ahead of time takes the stress out of having to do any extra thinking on your vacation so you can maximize pasta eating, wine drinking, and pool time!
If you’re planning a spring or summer getaway to Italy, here are the colorful items I’m bringing ranging from comfy espadrilles to sun hats and colorful maxis. Happy packing!
